Gently Spoken

I heard a testimony tonight, A young Girl (or rather, young woman) - her life, her heart aches, her rejection by her peers, her acceptance of Christ in her life, and the impact of 1 Corinthians 13 upon her.

I am glad to have heard her speak... Not just to hear the Glory of God at work in her life, but also it made me reflect a little, as the hearing of testimonies can often cause you to do.
It highlighted to me how words spoken can severely impact your life, either negatively or positively. Unfortunately more often than not they have a negative impact.
How a single comment like - You're Fat, or Ugly, or Stupid, etc can severely damage your self esteem, self-image, especially when you are young. They are a lie that we can believe and thus completely affect how we live our life.
We forget I think what damage the tongue can do... especially to those we love.
As parents we really need to watch what words we speak into our children's lives.
I know how much a child can crave to be told by their parent - "I'm proud of you" or "I love you" or "Well done" or the like.
We need to watch what sort of criticism we give out to our kids.
That a) it is not a personal attack on their character or being, & b) it is backed up with a positive constructive comment...
(remembering also that our actions have to back up our words not contradict them)
And the positives have to keep on coming... we need speak life into our kids!
The Bible speaks so much truth about the power of the tongue....

Proverbs 15:4
The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 18:21
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
James 3:6 James 3:5-10;
The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
1 Peter 3:10
For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

So let our speech be life giving and for building up not tearing down!
Let our tongues be like this:
Proverbs 31:26She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.Proverbs 31:25-27 (in Context) Proverbs 31 (Whole Chapter)
